Sport Club Corinthians Paulista is a soccer club in Brazil. [2] It was founded as a soccer team on September 1, 1910 by a group of workers from the Bom Retiro neighborhood, in the city of São Paulo. [3] The name was inspired by the Corinthian FC of London, which toured Brazil. [4] [5]
The initial idea was to found a new soccer team to play in Várzea football, as the São Paulo league was played only by elite teams. [3] [6] Thanks to a dissent between the aristocratic clubs of the Paulista League of Foot-Ball, Corinthians played a qualifying selective for the tournament of this entity, which was the most important at the time. Thus, in 1913 the club would play the Paulista Championship for the first time. [7] The humble origin of Corinthians was reflected in some of their nicknames, such as the workers' club or team of the people. It was the first Sao Paulo club to make room for poor players. It was also the second Brazilian football club - the first was Bangu - and the first of São Paulo football to accept black athletes on the team. [8] [9] [10]
Although the club has acted in other sports over the years, such as rowing, basketball, swimming, volleyball, tennis, taekwondo, futsal, judo, shuttlecock and handball, their main achievements and their recognition were achieved by professional football. [11] It was the first club to win the FIFA Club World Cup [12] and the only one to win the title at home in Brazil in 2000. [13] [14] [15] It also has four titles of the Brazilian Championship (1990, 1998, 1999 and 2005), [16] Three of the Brazilian Cup (1995, 2002 and 2009), [17] 26 of the Paulista Championship [17] - the latter being the largest recordist of achievements in the state and is the only three times three -time champion of the tournament [18] - and five from Rio -São Paulo tournament - (1950-1953-1954-1966-2002).
In 1951, Corinthians was the first team of Brazilian football to surpass the 100 goals mark in an official championship, when he played 103 in just 28 games in the Paulista Championship of that season. [19] From 1952 to 1954, the club made 28 international matches without defeat - including the dispute and win of the 1953 small World Cup in Venezuela, with two wins over Barcelona of Spain) [20] - and surpassed the previous record that belonged to Vasco. Corinthians is part of the select group of teams that officially represented the Brazilian soccer team, in a friendly against Arsenal in 1965, and is responsible for the largest rout that occurred to this day in Brazilian championships, when he made 10 to 1 at Tiradentes-PI in 1983. [21]
Corinthians' official stadium is Alfredo Schürig stadium, better known as "São Jorge Park" or "Fazendinha". It was reopened in 1928 and currently has a capacity of just 15,000 people. [22] [23] Playing there, the only title the club won was the Paulista of 1939. Because of the stadium's reduced capacity and for being a popular club since, Corinthians often act with the mastermind at the Pacaembu Municipal Stadium. [24] His main rivals in football are Palmeiras, with whom he disputes Derby Paulista, with Santos, with whom he disputes the classic Alvinegro, and São Paulo, with whom he disputes the majestic.
Its crowd is known as "faithful" [25] and its fans are estimated at more than 25 million throughout Brazil, which accredits Corinthians as the second most popular team in the country [26] [27] [28] and the first in the southeast and in the state of São Paulo - where there are more fans than São Paulo and Palmeiras together.
